友達B:うん。Un.‘Yeah?’

友達A:あの、この前ちょっと授業休んじゃったんだけど、あの国際関係論の、あの先週のクラス。あれ、ちょっとノート貸してくれない?Ano,konomaechottojugyouyasunjattandakedo,anokokusaikankeironno,anosenshuunokurasu.Are,chottonoutokashitekurenai?‘I missed a class, the international relations class last week.Could you lend me your notes?’

友達B:また?Mata?‘Again?’

友達A:うん。Un.‘Yeah.’

友達B:あれ、でも、ディスカッションベースのクラスだからさ、役に立たないと思うよ、ノート見たって。Are, demo,disukasshonbeesunokurasudakarasa,yakunitatanaiyonoutomitatte.‘But it’s a discussion-based class, so I don’t think looking at notes helps.’[Providing a reason for the refusal]

友達A:そうかなー。でも結構やっぱね、内容何にもわかってないとちょっと不安なんだよね。Soukanaa.Demokekkouyapparine,naiyounanimowakattenaitochottofuannandayone.‘You don’t think so?But I don’t understand what’s going on and that makes me nervous.’

友達B:そりゃそうだけど、いつも私に借りてばっかりじゃない?Soryasoudakedo,itsumowatahinikaritebakkarijanai?‘I’m sure you are right (about that nervousness), butyou always borrow my notes.’[Providing a reason for the refusal]

友達A:だってノートすごいきれいにとってあるんだもん。Dattenoutosugoikireinitottearundamon.‘But you take such neat notes.’

友達B:またそんなこと言って。Mata sonnakoto itte.‘You’re just saying that.’

友達A:だめかなあ。Damekanaa.‘Could you please?’

友達B:だめ。Dame.‘No.’[Making the refusal statement]

友達A:だめ?夫人呢?‘No?’

友達B:うん、ちょっとあんたね、英語下手なんだからさ、そう、

クラスに出てちょっと勉強したほうがいいんじゃないの?

Un,chottoantane,eigohetanandakarasa,sou,kurasunidetechottobenkyoushitahougaiinjanaino?‘No.Andyouare not that great at English, so why don’t you come to class to study a bit?’[Offering an alternative]

友達A:そっか?やっぱだめかな?Sokka?Yappadamekana?‘Really?You aren’t at all willing (to lend me your notes)?’

友達B:うん、だめだめ。クラス来なさいよ。Un, damedame.Kurasukinasaiyo.‘No, no, no, no.[Making the refusal statement]

Come to class.’[Offering an alternative]

友達A:しょうがないか。Shouganaika.‘No other options?’

友達B:うん。Un.‘No.’

友達A:うん、わかった。Un,wakatta.‘Okay, I understand.’

友達B:じゃあね。Jaane.‘See you.’
