Look at the Comparison Task for Sabastian and Maximus and take notes. What do you notice about their language?
  1. Did either of them seem to be more proficient in Japanese than the other? Which one? What made you think that?
  2. Jot down some notes about the features of their learner language that you remember, the ones that seemed to ‘jump out’ at you. Were there instances of ‘foreign accent’? Grammar error?

  1. Maximus probably seems more proficient than Sebastian. He takes the initiative and mostly leads the conversation, helps Sebastian with vocabulary, helps him complete sentences, even corrects Sebastian’s errors.

  2. You may have noticed Sebastian’s use of English words with Japanese pronunciation such as “garaaji (garage)” and “cháneru (channels)” instead of “gareeji (garage)” or “channeru (channels).” In Maximus’ speech, you may recall his ability to produce longer sentences and larger vocabulary but also his incorrect use of i-adjective negation, and his unclear use of several words (e.g., “tsuna” for grass/lawn).
