Social Justice in Language Education
CARLA’sSocial Justice in Language Educationinitiative aims to improve teachers’ understanding and application of critical pedagogies as they teach social justice themes. To support teachers in this work, CARLA has developed three interrelatedplanning templatesfor creating social justice curricular units grounded in target language texts: a curricular unit overview template, a lesson planning template, and a summative assessment template. Social Justice Curricular Units–NEW! An important goal of CARLA’s Social Justice in Language Education initiative is to provide instructional materials in multiple languages that teachers can use and adapt to meet their needs and those of their students. A team of课程开发人员drafted, piloted, and revised intermediate-level curricular units in French, German, and Spanish using the planning templates developed for this initiative. Find all of the following units on theSocial Justice Curricular Unitswebpage:
- Artistic Expressions of Individual and Cultural Identity (Spanish)
- Framing and Migration (German)
- Green Cities (German)
- Multicultural Paris (French)
- Proud to be Franco-Louisianian! (French)
Units in Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish are currently being piloted and revised. They will be posted on theSocial Justice Curricular Unitswebpage upon completion. 信息;n and Resources

June 6–10, 2023 University of Minnesota Working Toward Increased Understanding of Identity and Cultural Diversity through a Learner-Generated Content Approach
Saturday, June 10, 2023 8:30–9:00 a.m. Open Educational Resources (OER) continue to gain popularity due to the high cost of education and textbooks. While OER offer affordable solutions, less is known about the impact learner-generated materials have on the learning process. This project reports on a pilot that incorporated learner-generated content following a linguistic landscapes approach and integrated situated-learning technologies to increase engagement and intercultural awareness. We report on main themes identified in the submissions of beginning to advanced Spanish and French students, and their curricular integration. Finally, we address pedagogical considerations for incorporating the content in thematic units on bilingualism, cultural diversity, and linguistic identities. 现在的rs: Adolfo Carrillo Cabello, Shana Crosson, Cecily Brown, and Lydia Belateche (University of Minnesota) Workshop: Building Community Online: Make Fun, Personable, and Engaging Videos for FreeSaturday, June 10, 2023 1:00–4:00 p.m. Many language classes continue to be hybrid or completely online, and instructors worry about connecting with students and developing classroom community in online spaces. We recommend short videos created by the instructor and students for helping the online class “come alive”! We’ll start with an overview of the 3 online presences, and share guidelines for building community with and among students and the instructor. Then, using free software, you’ll learn to create and upload short, personable videos quickly and easily! Handouts will be provided. 现在的rs: Dan Soneson and Marlene Johnshoy (University of Minnesota)
International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT) Conference Language and Technology at the CrossroadsJune 14–17, 2023 New Orleans, Louisiana Workshop: Building Community Online: Engage Your Students with Videos You Create Yourselves
Wednesday, June 14, 2023 Part 1: 9:00–11:00 a.m. Part 2: 12:15–2:15 p.m. Instructors often worry about connecting with students and developing classroom community, especially in online spaces. We recommend short videos created by the instructor and students for helping the online class "come alive"! The workshop presents quick and easy ways to create, edit, and share videos, either by the instructor or by the students. Participants will go through the steps of creating a short video, taking advantage of the New Orleans location to create a personalized video. We will finish up with a "gallery walk" to view the videos created and conduct a brainstorming session to explore various ways to incorporate these short videos in the classroom, whether F2F, hybrid, or online. Participants should bring a laptop and/or mobile device. 现在的rs: Dan Soneson and Marlene Johnshoy (University of Minnesota) Forty Years in the Wilderness—Technology in Language Teaching星期六,2023年6月17日 9:05–9:55 a.m. Computer-based technology to support language teaching and learning has become ubiquitous and even mandatory since its incipient stages. Technology options have evolved, allowing for easy incorporation of multimedia and attention to multi-modal aspects of learning, as well as student-generated projects. While much has changed, though, much has remained the same. In this session we raise the question: to what extent technology has enabled the transformative nature of learning in actual practice. We briefly present the SAMR model (R. Puentadura) for implementation of educational technology. We then review our own experience with employing technology to support our teaching over the past forty years, from the early employment of the word processor through attempts at virtual reality as well as providing options for learners to be creative with technology, and raise questions for discussion regarding how far we have come. 现在的rs: Dan Soneson and Marlene Johnshoy (University of Minnesota)

20th AILA World CongressJuly 17–21, 2023 Lyon, France Symposium: Deconstructing the “Critical” in Critical Pedagogies: Teacher and Learner Perspectives
Wednesday, July 19, 2023 10:15 a.m.–6:00 p.m. (Central European Time) Critical approaches to language education engage students deeply with cultural content and empower them to question how language and culture embody, maintain, and challenge structural inequalities and biases. The goal of this symposium is to explore how and to what degree critical inquiry is present in language classes that employ critical approaches from the perspectives of student learning and teacher understanding and enactment. The symposium features 10 presentations from 26 international scholars.
Organizers: Kate Paesani and Mandy Menke (University of Minnesota) Symposium Paper: “Delving Deeper”: Affordances, Constraints, and Supports for Implementing Critical Inquiry in Language EducationThis qualitative study aims to deepen our understanding of how critical inquiry is carried out in language classes by examining the experiences of four postsecondary language instructors developing curricular units grounded in multiliteracies and social justice pedagogies. Data analyses focused on the mediational and environmental affordances and constraints that influence how instructors planned for critical inquiry in instruction as well as the tools and systems that supported their understanding of critical pedagogies and how to implement them. Findings suggest that individual and contextual factors afford and constrain the implementation of critical inquiry in language education. Furthermore, workshops and consultations with pedagogical experts, iterative and reflective planning, and peer collaboration are tools and systems that support instructors’ conceptual understanding and implementation of critical inquiry. Implications for teacher professional development to support critical inquiry in language education will be discussed. 现在的rs: Lauren Goodspeed and Helena Ruf (University of Minnesota)
